INTRO BY WOLFE FIT
Joanna, AKA @ketoincanada is one the most inspirational Instagramers out there! This being International Women's day, we are thrilled to share her journey and what #EmbraceYourJourney means to her!
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and why you began your fitness journey?
A: My name is Joanna and I’m a busy, 30 –something, working mom who has put herself on the back burner over the last handful of years. I am married with two children and photography is a passion of mine. Over the years, emotional eating had really taken its toll on my body. If someone hurt my feelings, I ate. If I felt undervalued at work, I ate. When I lost people close to me, I ate. Food would fill a void for me and improve my mood when things just weren’t going my way.
In October 2016, I sought help for emotional eating but that’s not exactly what I got. I didn’t gain any tools to help with stopping my emotional eating, but instead was given nutritional advice. Advice that, at the time made me angry and disconnected. The advice I was given was “Society tells you that it’s okay to eat a sandwich for lunch. It’s not okay to eat a sandwich for lunch”. As a former, self-professed Subway addict who spent many a lunch hour enjoying a six inch sub, this unsolicited nutritional advice made me mad. I was asked to start paying attention to the amount of carbs in my food, and was told that I should limit carbs to less than 20 grams a day.
I had never heard of low carb high fat eating before so I decided to research it. One day I woke up and said “Today’s the day!” and started. I had no food prepped or exercise scheduled. I just knew I was fed up with being tired and uncomfortable in my own skin.
Q: What does the term "embrace your journey" mean to you?
A: To me it means, you’re in for one hell of a ride. There are so many ups and downs when you decide to take the steps to better your life. It’s about self-discovery and realizing that you are capable of what you set your mind to. Learning to love yourself and embracing your own personal growth. Trying new things and letting go of bad habits. You’ve got to learn to pat yourself on the back for following through on the promises you make to yourself. It is said every day, weight loss isn’t linear. You cannot wake up one day at your goal weight – but man the journey sure is worth the effort.
Q: Who are your biggest inspirations And why?
A: My biggest inspirations are all the people I follow on my Instagram! There are so many awesome girls and guys who wake up every day and share their journeys with me. I don’t have to go far to get a daily dose of inspiration, or to celebrate a scale/ non-scale victory with someone who is busting their ass very day to improve themselves. These people have dedicated their time to self-improvement and it inspires me every single day.
Q: What's your biggest pet peeve in the fitness industry?
A: That you have to pay money to be a part of a weight loss community to be successful. I have fallen into that trap before where I didn’t know where to go for support so I thought I would find it with WeightWatchers or BeachBody. In the end, the support wasn’t there for me and I only ended up gaining additional weight and feeling bad about myself. There are free communities online, like Instagram where you can find support by giving it to others. You would be amazed how many people will cheer you on for your successes or help hold you up on your down days.
Q: What is your process for tackling a challenge and the hard days?
A: I always remind myself about the reason why I started. I’ll actually even go back and watch my very first Instagram video to remind me of how far I have come. My husband is also on a weight loss journey and his support has been extremely helpful. I have an inner strength that I didn’t realize I had before. I truly want my end goal more than I want the temporary indulgence. And it feels amazing!
Q: A piece of advice you'd like to give others on their fitness journey?
A: Your fitness journey really starts with you and you alone. If you are not 100% committed or looking to cheat on your journey, you are only cheating yourself. Commit to the process and your diet and you will be successful and reach your goals.
Just an incredible story of personal growth and amazing advice for women on their own journey or who are about to start!
