Meet Kayla | holistic nutrition, morning workouts and BIE are HER vices

INTRO BY WOLFE FIT
Meet Kayla Saint-Onge, a fellow Canadian gal born and raised in Guelph. She was recently living in the big city of TO and is now established in Waterloo with her Hubs and dog, Nala. We love following this babe, she has such great advice and is a true wellness entrepreneur in the making! #bossbabe
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and why you began your fitness journey?

A: I actually began my fitness journey about a year and a half ago out of a necessity to help cope during a period in my life where I was experiencing immense bouts of anxiety. I didn’t know it at the time that fitness was going to play such a huge role in how I coped and would eventually overcome it. I was initially seeing my acupuncturist Annde, ( @energytreeanne ) to help me with my anxiety. Anne also is a certified personal trainer and runs a program called the Energy Makeover which is a 6-week program that focuses on 4 workouts per week and following a paleo –like diet. Ever since I enrolled in the Energy Makeover, I haven’t looked back since! I began to notice a huge improvement in my overall wellbeing and realized that exercise along with diet, acupuncture and other modalities was the gateway to coping with and overcoming anxiety. While the anxiety is no longer a battle, exercise is in large, a major part of what keeps it at bay.
For me, my morning workouts are like going to church. It’s a form of meditation. It’s the one part of my day that I own, just for me. It’s my time to give back to myself. I love going down stairs to my basement, putting on a wicked playlist and crushing a good 30-40 minute work out before starting the day!

Q: How did you get into paleo and holistic nutrition?

A: About 6 years ago, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. While in the hospital (I was there for 1 month) it didn’t take long before I realized there was a major disconnect between diet and how our healthcare system treats and manages dis-ease. While in the hospital I adopted a paleo-like diet and having been eating this way ever since. It fuels my body and makes me feel my best which is the most important piece!

Upon my release from the hospital, I was determined to learn how the body worked so I could overcome the disease. This is when I decided to enroll in school to become a Holistic Nutritionist. Around this time, I had just been introduced to a BioEnergetic Practitioner who quite literally changed my WHOLE life around. BIE works with the energy of the body by reintroducing stressors (such as food) back into the body while your body is in a balanced energetic state so that the next time you are exposed to that stressor (such as food) your body is able to recognize it and you no longer experience symptoms. After working with this BIE practitioner, I knew right away I needed to become one myself!

Q: Can you tell us about your business?

A: I am REALLY excited about this given the role BIE has played in my own healing journey. I recently launched my practice @balancedbykayla as a BioEnergetic Practitioner and Holistic Nutritionist. Balanced by Kayla is all about using BIE to help get clients ‘balanced out’. WTF does get ‘balanced out’ mean?! I work with clients to help them achieve their health goals, uncover undiagnosed symptoms, provide answers to questions they sometimes did not know existed and get to the root of what is causing their symptoms so they can be relieved of them! Whether it’s digestive issues, allergies (food and environmental), hormone issues, headaches, blood issues, BIE brings balance back to the body so you no longer suffer from those symptoms.

How it works: Muscle testing or applied kinesiology is first used to identify the stressors. Once the stressors are identified, a unique tool called the GSR-120 is applied to various acupressure points on the body to help unblock energy imbalances while reintroducing the frequency of the stressor on to the body, so that your body is able to recognize it, which results in alleviating your symptoms! Most clients notice a huge change in symptom relief after just one BIE session. It can take up to 4 or more depending on the symptom and severity of the health concern. Everyone’s individual body is different, so each session is specially customized based on your own unique needs! I realize this can sound really voodoo (it did to me when I first came across it 6 years go) so, if you’re looking for more information, feel free to email me at: balancedbykayla@outlook.com. My website is launching soon and until then, I welcome you to follow me at @balancedbykayla for any updates!

Q: What is your ultimate goal?

A: My ultimate goal is to share my journey in hopes of helping as many people as possible in the same way I was helped on my health journey. I hope to be a resource for wellness information, inspire others and remind them they are not alone, as dis-ease can often be so isolating.
Q: What does the term “embrace your journey” mean to you?

A: It’s all about embracing life no matter what path you may be on! I knew that back when I was diagnosed with colitis that there was a reason this had happened. And not in the blame-myself kind of way. But in the way of something greater was going to come as a result of this. We don’t always know WHY things occur in the moments or events that they do, as hindsight is 20/20. But - we always have the option to change our attitude and make the most out of our situation! For me, my di-ease was the spring board to a whole new direction that I chose to take my life me in. The journey still continues, and I haven’t yet arrived at my destination. In fact, I feel like I’ve only just begun!

Q: Who/what are your biggest inspirations and why?

A: On the fitness side of things: I think I am so drawn to the Energy Makeover because Anne ( @energytreeanne ) truly inspires me!
Someone once told me that if you want something, look at the people who have what you want (and I don’t mean in some weird obsessive way or to make yourself feel worse). See what they’re doing, how they’re doing it and try to embrace it. For me, Anne has really set the stage in terms of promoting a healthy, but balanced lifestyle and is alllll about being strong; not skinny. That is exactly what I’m trying to achieve from a fitness perspective myself which is why I have found her and her program to be so inspiring and motivating!

When it comes to health and nutrition: the trailblazers and pioneers and the founders of BIE: Rob Tomilson and Silvana Fazzioli are two individuals that have really inspired me. BIE has been so influential in my own personal healing journey and has helped so many of my family and friends. It inspired me to become a practitioner which speaks volumes in terms of the impact it’s had on my life.

Q: What is your process for tackling a challenge and the hard days?

A: I have a two-pronged approach!

1. Sticking to a routine is really helpful for me. It provides guidance and structure when things become overwhelming or the lines become blurred. For example, I know if I stick to my morning workout, I will 100% feel better afterwards and it sets the tone for the rest of the day. It is the same with healthy eating habits. When I fuel my body with good fats and healthy home cooked meals, I feel properly nourished and energized and am that much more able to deal with life’s ups and downs.

2. I also believe in bringing it back to basics, doing what the minimum if that’s all I’m capable of, giving myself a break, having positive self talk and setting realistic expectations. That might involve journaling, diffusing or applying some @sajewellness essential oils, going for a walk with my dog, taking time to bake in the kitchen, reading a book or just taking a break from the routine, skipping that one workout to spend more time lying in bed reading that morning because that’s what my body needed that day. It’s ALL about listening and being in tune with what YOU need, YOUR body needs and then going with the flow!

9. A piece of advice you’d like to give others on their fitness journey?

A: Understand what YOUR motivation is and keep that as a reminder when your mind becomes weaker than your willpower and to not let it get in the way of you achieving your goal! At the same time, remember that it is a JOURNEY. Which means, expect that you WILL have days where you can’t do all 30 lunges and only 20 will suffice, or that you missed your alarm and had to skip your workout that morning to get to work on time, or that it may take 2 months versus 1 before you start to notice desired results.
You NEED to give yourself room to GROW along this journey and really remember – IT’S A LIFESTYLE! Fitness is just as important as brushing your teeth, or any other daily hygiene routine! Our body, our mind and our spirits ALL need this activity to thrive! And ultimately, do whatever form of exercise YOU like to do! You don’t have to do whatever the trend is. Be OPEN to discovering what fitness looks like for you and if it’s a combination of things, that’s ok too!
